The main objective of ion nitriding is surface hardening of mechanical or tooling components in the finished machined condition.
The treatment improves the following properties:
- Wear resistence due to high levels of hardness.
- Resistance to seizing due to very low coefficient of friction.
- The resistance to fatigue due to the high compressive forces of the nitrided layer.
- The resistance to corrosion of steels due to the chemistry of the nitrided case.
Case Depth Defined
The nitrided case depth is defined by the position of the point of hardness superior by 50 Vickers units to the core hardness.
Heat treated materials yield the best properties.
